Leaders Unite to Honor Jimmy Carter at State Funeral

America's Leaders Honor Carter at Cathedral Service.

Past and present leaders came together at a grand church in Washington to say goodbye to Jimmy Carter. The former president died last week at age 100.

Five presidents sat close to each other: Joe Biden, Donald Trump, Barack Obama, George Bush, and Bill Clinton. Their wives joined them, except Michelle Obama, who stayed in Hawaii.

Vice President Kamala Harris was there with Doug Emhoff. Former vice presidents Mike Pence and Al Gore came. Hillary Clinton sat next to her husband Bill.

President Biden spoke warmly of his old friend Carter. He praised Carter's good character and the great work he did after leaving office. Biden remembered being the first senator to support Carter's run for president years ago.

Trump and Obama shared a friendly moment before the service began. Despite their past fights, people saw them smile and talk. Trump's wife, Melania, came with him.

The day brought some old rivals face to face. Trump and Pence shook hands, though they had fallen out after the Capitol riot. Pence had stood up to Trump on January 6, 2021, when angry crowds wanted to stop Biden from becoming president.

World leaders filled the church. Canada's leader, Justin Trudeau, looked stern when he saw Trump, who had been harsh about Canada lately. Harris and Trump, who had just faced off in the election, stayed apart and didn't shake hands.

Many speakers talked about Carter's life of helping others. Steve Ford read words his father, Gerald Ford, wrote about Carter before he died. The two men had promised to speak at each other's funerals, and Carter kept that promise when Ford died in 2007.

Ford's words showed how rivals can become friends. He wrote that fate made them compete, but time made them close friends forever.
