Lecornu quits weeks after Macron names him French PM

French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu submitted his resignation on Monday after President Emmanuel Macron accepted his departure just weeks following his appointment. The 39-year-old former defense minister faced immediate criticism from his coalition and opposition parties after announcing his cabinet lineup on Sunday. Conservative Republicans expressed anger over the return of Bruno Le Maire as defense minister after his tenure as economy minister from 2017 to 2024.

National Rally leader Jordan Bardella criticized the new government as merely representing continuity from the previous administration. Macron appointed Lecornu on Sept. 9 following the ouster of Prime Minister Francois Bayrou and his cabinet through a parliamentary no-confidence vote over proposed spending cuts. La France Insoumise parliamentary group president Mathilde Panot had denounced Lecornu's nomination as a provocation and accused Macron of favoring policies benefiting wealthy minorities.
