Lewis Hamilton Devastated After Hitting Groundhog in Canada

Lewis Hamilton felt crushed after his car struck a groundhog during Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix. The Ferrari driver hit the animal on lap 13 of the Montreal race. The crash left a hole in his SF-25 car's floor. Hamilton finished sixth place after the damage slowed him down. His team said the hole cost him about half a second each lap for the rest of the race.

The 40-year-old driver cares deeply about animals and follows a vegan diet. Hamilton called the groundhog's death horrible and devastating. He never saw the animal before hitting it but heard about the crash from his team. The seven-time world champion said he hoped the groundhog did not suffer. He added that nothing like this had happened to him at this track before.

Groundhogs live all around the Montreal racing circuit. These large squirrels are common in North America. The track sits on a man-made island in the Saint Lawrence River. Mercedes driver George Russell won his first race of the season. Russell started from pole position and stayed ahead of champion Max Verstappen.
