Majority Leader Denies Bill Targets Auditor General

Kimani Ichung'wah pushed back against rumors about his proposed law changes during a meeting at the National Assembly. The top lawmaker denied wanting to kick out the Auditor General from her job. He explained that his proposed changes simply fix problems the High Court found with an older law from 2016.

He pointed out something important about the committee report. "I checked what the Finance Committee suggested. They never asked to remove the Auditor General as boss. When Nancy Gathungu met with them, she never said the changes would take away her position," Ichung'wah stated. His comments came after many people questioned his motives.

Nancy Gathungu made headlines recently because she found big problems with healthcare contracts. She told senators she did exactly what her job required. "I found the use of public money broke the rules. I clearly showed there were serious issues with how they managed risks," Gathungu explained during her testimony about the problems she discovered.

Her official report exposed several issues with a huge $104 billion tech system purchase. The report showed officials skipped required competitive bidding. They bought items not included in the budget. The contract lacked clear work descriptions and payment terms. Even worse, the deal gave a private company complete control over government health information.

Ichung'wah defended his timeline against social media attacks. He stressed he published his proposed changes back in January 2024, not January 2025 as claimed online. "Anyone saying I targeted the Auditor General because of her recent findings speaks falsehoods," he insisted during the heated discussion about his intentions.

He reminded everyone about constitutional protections. The Auditor General works as an independent official protected by Article 229 of the Kenyan Constitution. These legal safeguards exist specifically to shield this position from political interference when uncovering government spending problems.
