Makerere University in Kampala is under fire over the THE rankings fiasco

Times Higher Education stepped forward to clear the air after media chaos erupted over Makerere University rankings. The publisher shot down claims that Uganda's top university plummeted to 41st place across Africa. Officials explained that institutions get grouped into bands and listed alphabetically rather than by actual scores. Reports had wrongly mixed up different ranking systems and created false impressions about the university's academic standing. The clarification came after Daily Monitor published a story claiming Makerere had crashed from 4th to 41st position continentally.

University leaders fired back hard against the negative coverage and called the reporting misleading. They pointed to other ranking systems that place Makerere at 13th in Africa and 912th globally according to Centre for World University Rankings. EduRank puts the institution at 7th across the continent and within the top 5 percent worldwide. The school highlighted its strength in health sciences research and contributions to sustainable development goals. Administrative officials pushed back against what they saw as unfair attacks on their academic reputation.

Social media exploded with criticism from former students and parents who blamed poor leadership for declining standards. Online activists targeted Vice Chancellor Barnabas Nawangwe and accused him of destroying decades of progress at the historic institution. Higher education experts warned people to approach university rankings with healthy skepticism. Some professors questioned whether ranking systems can be manipulated by universities seeking better publicity and more funding opportunities.
