Malawi Federal Plan Has Regions Fighting For Cash

People across Malawi argue about changing how their government works. Political watchers want regions to have more power over local decisions. Thomas Chirwa studies politics from Tanzania and thinks federalism could help all areas grow better. He believes local governments should control their communities without losing connection to the main government. Chirwa says this system stops development from staying in just one place.

Tanzania shows how this system works well for African countries. Zanzibar runs its affairs separately but remains part of Tanzania as a whole. Many nations, like Nigeria, Ethiopia, and the United States, use federal systems successfully. These countries let regions make choices that best suit their people. Local control helps communities solve problems faster.

Kamlepo Kalua fought for democracy and wants the Northern Region to manage its resources. Griffin Maruwasa studies politics from Balaka and sees growing support for federalism. Critics worry the system costs more money and might split regions apart. They fear politicians could misuse regional power for personal gain. Supporters argue federalism gives every region fair chances to succeed.
