Malawi Urges Farmers to Scale Up Ginger Production

Malawi needs farmers to grow more ginger as market demand keeps rising. The Trade Minister, Vitumbiko Mumba, spoke at a workshop about roots and tubers that might replace imports. He told local reporters that farmers currently produce much less than the 500 tonnes needed every month. With increased farming, Malawi could satisfy local needs and sell ginger to other countries. The crop shows great potential for helping change the national economy.

Success depends on giving farmers better farming methods, supplies, and ways to sell their harvest. The government promises to work with partners to improve ginger farming from start to finish. Ireland Embassy representative Jacob Hasen Shearer called these meetings important for changing the economy. He stressed that teamwork between the government, helpers, and businesses can make farmers more productive. Ireland will keep supporting farm projects that match what Malawi wants to achieve.

Many people attended this meeting, including farmers, officials, aid groups, and scientists. They talked about how ginger, cassava, and sweet potatoes can reduce dependence on foreign goods. Malawi spends millions of kwacha buying farm products that local people could grow instead. Everyone agreed that making more ginger would save money on imports and create jobs for rural people.
