Malawians urge mercy for jailed Tanzanian traders at the border

Social media influencer Kalawe has urged Malawian authorities to pardon two Tanzanian traders imprisoned for three months after authorities discovered them selling belts and other merchandise near the border. The appeal directed at Deputy Minister of Homeland Security Norman Chisale argued that the young vendors were simply attempting to earn income and should be deported rather than jailed, emphasizing that African neighbors deserve compassion.

The Facebook post sparked widespread discussion among Malawians about continental unity and shared economic struggles, with supporters noting that many citizens also work informally across Africa without proper documentation. Kalawe reminded followers that borders represent colonial impositions and stressed the importance of regional solidarity.

While numerous citizens endorsed the clemency request, some respondents cautioned that legal frameworks require consistent enforcement regardless of sympathy for individual circumstances.
