Malawi's Trade Minister Pushes Banks to Back SMEs for Economic Growth

Malawi's trade minister surprised shoppers when he showed up at Gateway Mall over the weekend. Vitumbiko Mumba dropped by to check out a special business event that National Bank of Malawi put together. The bank brought more than 50 small business owners from across the country to show off their products. Mumba loved what he saw and praised the bank for helping local entrepreneurs. He wants other banks to copy this smart move.

National Bank of Malawi has promised to spend 60 billion kwacha on helping small businesses grow. The minister called the bank's boss to thank him for making such a huge commitment. Mumba believes small companies are the key to making Malawi rich and successful. He thinks banks need to step up and support these hardworking business people. The minister sees small enterprises as the future of the country's economy.

Mark Chiweza Banda runs a fish farm called Apoche Farms and loved being part of the event. He told reporters that his business makes lots of products but struggles to find customers. The bank's exhibition gave him a chance to meet potential buyers and show what his company can do. Banda thanked the bank for giving small businesses a platform to shine. Many other business owners felt the same way about the opportunity.

The celebration featured live music from popular local artists like Teddy Makadi and Mazani. Kids enjoyed special entertainment activities during the family-friendly event. The bank organized this exhibition to mark International Micro Small and Medium Enterprises Day on June 27. Countries around the world celebrate how small businesses create jobs and help communities prosper.
