Minister Mutsvangwa Boosts SME Growth for Economic Prosperity

Women Affairs Minister Monica Mutsvangwa says small and medium enterprises drive job creation, economic development, and poverty reduction across Zimbabwe. During her lecture at the Zimbabwe Staff College yesterday, she highlighted how the government stands firmly behind these businesses to ensure every region develops as part of the national Vision 2030 plan. The minister addressed military professionals during the joint command and staff course, emphasizing their unique position to take advantage of business opportunities.

Minister Mutsvangwa explained that starting businesses offers a path toward financial independence and wealth building for many citizens. She strongly encouraged military professionals to consider entrepreneurship as a way to create lasting financial stability. The government has actively helped thousands of small businesses reach new markets both locally and internationally. Last year alone, over 14,000 enterprises received support to participate in trade shows across multiple countries, including Zambia, Tanzania, China, and Turkey.

The minister reported that 41 small businesses have already been selected to showcase their products at the prestigious Osaka World Expo happening in Japan. Her ministry works closely with local governments and private investors to develop proper workspaces for these entrepreneurs. Several construction projects for business facilities have started in cities like Gweru, Bulawayo, and Chikomba, demonstrating serious financial commitment from the national government. These projects use innovative funding approaches that involve private sector participation.

Recent government policies have created a more favorable environment for banks and financial institutions to support small businesses through loans. Many new banking services specifically target women business owners, offering flexible terms and longer repayment periods alongside business training. The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe has successfully implemented financial inclusion strategies that connect more small enterprises with banking services. Official surveys show the sector has grown to include 3.4 million registered businesses employing nearly 5 million people nationwide. These enterprises generate about 60 percent of the national GDP, with women making up more than half of all full-time workers in the sector.
