Malaysia expects durian exports to top RM1.5 billion as China drives demand

Malaysia projects durian export revenues will surpass RM1.5 billion during the current year. Strong consumer demand from China, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Canada drives this growth trajectory. Agriculture and Food Security Minister Mohamad Sabu announced these figures at the 2025 Durian Festival in Gua Musang. Export values jumped 256.3 percent between 2018 and 2022, rising from RM321.2 million to RM1.14 billion. The minister emphasized how durian represents a valuable agricultural commodity that benefits farmers and creates economic opportunities.

Global market research indicates the worldwide durian industry will reach USD10.78 billion by 2025 and USD16.89 billion by 2030. China dominates regional consumption patterns, purchasing over 90 percent of durian imports across the Asia Pacific markets. Malaysia secured fresh fruit export access to China through a phytosanitary protocol signed on June 19, 2024. Earlier agreements permitted only processed durian products like pulp and paste from 2011, with frozen whole fruits authorized in 2018. This new arrangement expands market opportunities for Malaysian growers significantly.
