Police arrested a 70-year-old man for destroying bird nests and killing baby birds. Mobarak Ali Fakir faces charges after he cut down a palm tree that held many baya weaver nests. Officers took him from his home at Guaton village under Shekherhat union. The arrest came after forest officials filed a legal case against three people. A local union council member also filed a separate case with police.
The incident happened on June 27 when several people cut down a palm tree on government land. Local residents warned them not to harm the tree because it contained many bird nests. The men ignored these warnings and destroyed the tree anyway. Officials report that 47 nests, 96 baby birds, and 24 eggs were lost. The tree stood beside a road and belonged to the government.
Forest officials charged the men under the Wildlife Conservation and Security Act from 2012. They filed their case with the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court. The Forest Department has already planted new palm trees at the same location. They also started programs to teach local people about protecting wildlife.
Environment Secretary Dr Farhina Ahmed spoke about the case. She said the government will take strong legal action against anyone who harms wildlife or destroys animal homes. The department wants to prevent similar incidents from happening again.
