A Harare magistrate refused to grant bail Tuesday for a man whose dogs killed a pedestrian last month. Mike Mupinga faces culpable homicide charges after his four animals attacked Samuel Machara on May 30. The 40-year-old defendant will stay behind bars until his trial begins. Magistrate Marewanazvo Gofa made the decision during court proceedings. Stephen Chikotora serves as defense counsel for the accused.
Prosecutors say Mupinga kept three pitbulls and one rottweiler at his rental property without proper restraints. The animals broke free from his New Bluffhill yard and found Machara walking along the street. They bit the victim across his entire body during the vicious assault. Machara sustained fatal injuries to his neck, arms, legs and abdomen. Police discovered one white pitbull covered with blood when they arrived at the scene.
The National Prosecuting Authority fought against releasing Mupinga on bond. Officials argue he showed careless behavior when he failed to muzzle his dangerous pets. The attack happened outside his residence after the dogs climbed over a low boundary wall. Rufaro Chonzi leads the prosecution team handling the case. Court records show the victim died from multiple deep bite wounds.
