Mangwana tells fearful Matabeleland victims to feel free to talk

Zimbabwe authorities express contentment with advancement in Gukurahundi reconciliation proceedings currently underway across Matabeleland regions. Traditional leadership spearheads these community sessions that began three weeks prior and contacted approximately 200 affected individuals by Thursday of the previous week. Chief Mtshane Khumalo guides the Chiefs Council of Zimbabwe as president while directing this sensitive outreach effort. Officials encourage participation from impacted families to achieve comprehensive closure and foster nationwide unity essential for development progress. Nick Mangwana from the Ministry of Information urges communities to engage without fear during these crucial discussions.

Statistical data reveals substantial community involvement with Matabeleland South Province recording 127 completed interviews while Matabeleland North documented 40 sessions. Chief Masendu of Bulilima district conducted an exceptional 83 interviews demonstrating remarkable local engagement levels. Chief Magama from Tsholotsho facilitated 13 interviews whereas Chief Nkalakatha of Nkayi oversaw 10 community sessions. Additional chiefs across both provinces contributed varying numbers of interviews to support this reconciliation framework. Opposition political groups previously attempted to discourage victim participation yet community response indicates growing trust in traditional leadership approaches.

President Mnangagwa launched this healing initiative during July of the previous year after empowering customary authorities to manage the process effectively. The government initiated broader Gukurahundi resolution efforts during February 2019 through internal mechanisms designed to strengthen national cohesion. Traditional leaders received comprehensive training to conduct these sensitive hearings within their respective jurisdictions. This home-grown approach aims to address post-independence disturbances that affected Matabeleland and portions of Midlands Province during the 1980s. Community chiefs continue expanding their outreach efforts to ensure comprehensive coverage of affected populations.
