A big bank just slapped its name on a major football tournament. NMB Bank signed a five-year title deal to rebrand the Mapinduzi Cup as the NMB Mapinduzi Cup, starting with this year's edition. The agreement runs through 2030. This year's contest features ten teams across three groups, including Ugandan side URA FC. Group A has Mlandege, Azam FC, Singida Black Stars, and URA FC. Group B contains Simba SC, Muembe Makumbi City, and Fufuni FC, while Group C includes Yanga, KVZ, and TRA United.
Zanzibar's Information Minister Riziki Pembe Juma said the sponsorship elevates the tournament's profile and showcases public-private partnership. NMB's Donatus Richard highlighted the bank's decade-long support, stating the deal reinforces a commitment to football development and national unity. The competition will run at the New Amaan Complex in Unguja and Gombani Stadium in Pemba, concluding a day after the Zanzibar Revolution celebrations. The champion team gets 150 million shillings, with 100 million for the runner-up. NMB will also fund increased Fair Play Player of the Match cash prizes throughout the event, with the final attended by President Hussein Mwinyi. Organizing committee officials said the funding brings financial stability and allows for a more professional, regionally-focused competition.
