Nandi politician Shadrack Maritim showed up at the Busia border after vanishing for 35 days back in October, and Ugandan authorities handed him over to Kenyan cops who brought him to Eldoret for medical checks at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital. Police found him wandering around Mbale looking scared and confused after he called his family, saying someone had dumped him there.
His lawyer, Kibe Mungai, told the High Court in Eldoret that this whole situation fits a sketchy pattern of missing Kenyans magically appearing near Uganda right before habeas corpus hearings go down. Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Benjamin Mwanthi confirmed investigators are trying to piece together what actually happened during those five weeks.
The court set another hearing for mid-December because Mungai wants to push forward with the case despite Maritim turning up alive, arguing that politicians getting threatened and disappearing near border towns is becoming a serious problem that needs addressing.
