The Drug Law Enforcement Agency (DLEAG) stated on January 24 about a Central Bank employee arrested with a large sum of cash. The arrest took place at the Jenoi checkpoint around 4:15 pm GMT.
DLEAG officers worked with State Intelligence Services (SIS), the Gambia Police Force, and a military intelligence officer. They arrested Lamin Marong, Lamin Darboe, and Famara Njie. Marong works at the Central Bank of The Gambia (CBG).
The suspects were in a private vehicle heading to Mandory, North Bank Region. During a routine check, officers found $57,800 and 370,000 dalasis in a bag.
Marong said a senior CBG official gave him the dollars to deliver to his father. He did not know the reason for the large amount.
Marong also had 290,000 dalasis. He said a relative gave him old currency notes to exchange. The rest was for an upcoming event in their village.
The police in Mansakonko took over the case for more investigation.
