Matabeleland survivors file 1,297 Gukurahundi testimonies

Zimbabwe's government collected more than 1,000 testimonies from Gukurahundi survivors across Matabeleland regions during the first two weeks of a new community healing initiative. Attorney-General Virginia Mabiza leads the peace-building secretariat that manages this victim-centered approach to national reconciliation. Traditional leaders conduct sessions in familiar village settings where participants share experiences in their native languages. The process maintains strict confidentiality while providing protection against potential harm to those who participate. Community trust has grown as respected local figures facilitate these important conversations.

Official records show 1,297 submissions from both affected provinces, with Matabeleland South contributing 953 cases and Matabeleland North providing 344 testimonies. Hearings take place at traditional courts and family homesteads where survivors feel comfortable speaking openly about past grievances. The programme addresses one of Zimbabwe's most sensitive historical periods through culturally appropriate methods. Officials plan to continue gathering testimonies until all affected communities receive adequate engagement opportunities. Future phases will focus on analyzing collected data and developing appropriate policy responses.
