Melaka clinics treat 758 mental health cases since 2021

Melaka health officials report that 758 mental health patients received treatment at health clinics from 2021 through June, with depression accounting for nearly half of all cases. State Health, Human Resources and Unity Committee chairman Datuk Ngwe Hee Sem disclosed that 600 patients were new cases, while 158 transferred from Melaka Hospital for primary-level care. Depression represented 48 percent of diagnoses, followed by anxiety disorder at 24 percent and schizophrenia at 18 percent.

The data excludes patients treated at hospitals or private facilities. Clinic services encompass screening, clinical examinations, basic counseling and mild psychosocial interventions, with hospital referrals made when specialist care becomes necessary. Hospital patients access psychiatrists and mental medicine specialists offering subspecialty services in child and adolescent psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, neuropsychiatry, forensic psychiatry and substance abuse treatment.

The Ministry of Health strengthens community support through the Mentari Programme and self-screening platforms like MyMinda and the Mentari portal. The K-MindSet programme trains community leaders to raise awareness and combat stigma surrounding mental health issues.
