Mela's Matrix is overkill for a simple comb filter

Mela already ships a Comb Filter module that combines feedback and feedforward designs in a single unit, which makes the Matrix version look redundant at first. It is not. But the reason has nothing to do with sound quality.

Matrix treats incoming audio the same way it treats a carrier. Node A receives the module's audio input, and every other node stays silent until a route sends something into it. The last active node hands back the output.

Nikolozi added the module in a mid-August update to Mela, which also reworked the Stereo Tool's mid and side options. It lives in Collection 5. That matters if you are weighing whether the effect side alone justifies the purchase.

Two existing modules already cover the ordinary jobs​

The Comb Filter module gives you Mode, Frequency, Time for left and right, Blend, Feedback, Feedforward, a filter in the feedback path, and a high-pass cutoff. That single module covers comb filtering, resonators, doublers, chorus, flanging, slapback, and vibrato. Building any of those inside Matrix means recreating controls you already have.

Stereo Delay is the same story. It gives independent time, low cut, high cut, and feedback per channel, plus cross feedback from left into right and right into left. Ping-pong patterns are already solved.

Digital Delay goes further than people expect. It carries a delay path sublane, so you can process the delayed signal inside the feedback loop rather than after it. Filter the repeats, distort them, crush them. The loop stays intact, and the module keeps its own hard clipper at +6 dBFS.

Two other containers cover shapes people reach for constantly. Stack feeds a copy of its input to every submodule at once and sums the results, which is how you build parallel processing without any routing at all. Splitter pairs its submodules so the first of each pair splits the signal and the second processes what it caught, with an unpaired final module handling the residual.

Neither of those needs a routing grid, because the signal path is already decided for you. Matrix asks you to decide it. That freedom is the cost as much as the feature.

Cross-fed taps are the thing you cannot build elsewhere​

Stereo Delay gives you two taps that can feed each other. Matrix gives you up to seven nodes, and every route between them carries its own level. Tap five can feed tap two at a whisper while tap two feeds tap five hard.

That is the actual purchase. Cross-fed delay taps in arbitrary directions, with independent gain on each path, built without a mixer or a splitter anywhere in the signal flow.

The direction of a route decides its timing. Forward routes pass audio on the current sample. Backward routes carry a single sample of delay, which is what turns a plain routing grid into something that resonates.

Put a real delay module inside a node, and the same logic applies at musical time scales instead of sample time. Six delay modules across six nodes, cross-routed at different levels, produce tap patterns that no fixed delay design exposes to you.

Ring modulation hides inside the oscillator modules​

Matrix does not have a dedicated ring modulator, and that trips people up. The developer's own answer is to place a VA Oscillator in a node and turn its Ring dial to one hundred percent, which rings that oscillator against whatever audio reaches the node.

Stack offers a second way in. Its output mode can be set to Ring Mod instead of Sum Audio, which rings all of its submodules against each other rather than against one node's input. Use that when you want the whole chain multiplied, and use the Matrix approach when you want it happening at one point in a loop.

The result either way is a proper carrier-and-input product rather than a simple mix. Route the output back to an earlier node, and you get metallic tails that shift with input level. Route it forward instead, and it stays clean and predictable.

Two factory patches show the pattern already working. Matrix Reverb sits in the Audio FX folder, and Matrix Comb Filter sits under Subpatches, saved as a subpatch rather than a full patch.

That second detail is the useful one. Because it is a subpatch, you can drop it into any other patch you build without reconstructing the node layout, and exported subpatches now keep their global settings intact. Reuse was the weak point of building effects this way, and it has quietly stopped being one.
