Fixed vocal chains - put your air boost before the compressor

The PS-VC1 runs its six modules in one fixed order: Low End, High End, Compress, Reverb, Echo, Width, and you cannot rearrange a single one. That is the whole design. It is also a set of mixing decisions made for you before you open the plugin.

Almost every guide to vocal chain order lands in the same place. Subtractive EQ first, compression next, de-essing after that, then additive EQ, saturation, and time-based effects on sends. The reasoning is sound, and it assumes you control the sequence.

Strip that control away and the advice does not become wrong. It becomes unavailable, which is a different problem, and one worth understanding before you commit a lead vocal to a locked signal path.

Both EQ stages land on the wrong side of the compressor​

Low End and High End both sit ahead of the compressor. Subtractive filtering belongs there, so the compressor is not reacting to rumble you were going to remove anyway, and that part works exactly as it should.

Even the corrective side is preset-bound. Low End gives you four calibrated shapes covering ranges from 20 to 150 hertz up to 60 to 640 hertz, so a surgical cut at one specific problem frequency is not a move this stage can make.

Additive shaping is the problem. When you lift the Air band and feed it into a compressor, the detector sees that extra top end and pulls the loudest syllables down harder, so the compressor spends the chorus quietly removing the brightness you just added.

The standard fix is two EQ instances, one before compression and one after. Here you get one pass at both bands, ahead of everything, which means an air lift is a request rather than a result.

You can work around it from outside. Set the High End module conservatively, then put a second EQ after the whole plugin to add the brightness your compressor keeps undoing. That works, and it also means the all-in-one chain is no longer all-in-one.

Nothing in the chain catches the sibilance compression creates​

There is no de-esser among the six modules. Not as a preset, not hidden inside the compressor, not anywhere.

Consensus puts de-essing directly after compression, because compression is a large part of what makes sibilance jump forward in the first place. That is precisely the handoff point where this chain moves on to Reverb instead.

So the compressed vocal, with its consonants now sitting higher than they did going in, walks straight into a reverb and then a delay. Both of those effects will happily reproduce every harsh S in the take.

If you sing softly or you are mixing a naturally dark voice, none of this will bother you. Push a bright pop vocal through the Silk or Air setting and the missing stage becomes the loudest thing in the chain.

Reverb and echo stop being a routing choice​

Reverb comes before Echo, permanently. The repeats therefore carry the reverb tail with them rather than the reverb washing over the repeats, and the two arrangements sound noticeably different on a lead line.

Both effects also live on the insert with a wet and dry mix control rather than on a send. That single fact removes several things engineers do routinely, and none of them are exotic.

You cannot share one reverb across a lead and eight backing vocals. You cannot high-pass the return without touching the dry signal. You cannot duck the delay against the vocal or automate the throw on one word, because the effect and the source are welded together at every point in the song.

Insert reverb also reacts badly to anything you compress afterward, which is where pumping tails come from. Keeping the compressor upstream avoids that, and it is very likely why the modules sit in this order at all. That is the trade you accept with the fixed six-module Professional Series layout, and it is a reasonable one for a fast rough mix.

The deeper restriction is that nothing can go between the stages. Pitch correction, saturation, a transient tool, a second compressor doing a different job - all of it has to happen entirely before the plugin or entirely after it.

That pushes you toward a specific workflow. Use the chain as a fast tone-setting block on the way in, then treat everything it cannot do as a separate stage on either side of it, rather than expecting six fixed modules to replace a chain you can reorder at will.
