Military Court Crisis Explodes as Lawyer Demands Release

Some lawyers are trying to help Mr. Eron Kiiza leave jail. Mr. Kiiza must stay in jail for nine months because a military court said he broke the rules. His friends went to a different court on Tuesday morning to ask for help.

Mr. Peter Walubiri and Mr. George Musisi told Judge Douglas Singiza that a military court cannot put people in jail unless they work in the army. Mr. Kiiza works as a lawyer, not a soldier.

Mr. Walubiri said, "The big court already decided that military courts cannot judge regular people. This means Mr. Kiiza should be free right away."

The judge asked where cases like this should go. Mr. Walubiri explained that all judges can help keep people free, no matter what kind of cases they usually handle.

Mr. Johnson Natuhwera disagreed with these lawyers. He said the military court did have the right to put Mr. Kiiza in jail. "The big court says military courts can handle some cases," he said. "Mr. Kiiza broke the rules in that court, and they gave him a smaller punishment than they could have."

Judge Singiza will announce his decision on Monday, March 3, at 2:30 p.m. The judge must decide whether Mr. Kiiza should stay in jail or go home.
