Ministry Denies Reports on Scrapping Teacher Allowances

Ministry Dismisses Reports of Scrapping Teacher Trainee Allowances.

Accra, Ghana - The Ministry of Education has refuted claims that the government plans to eliminate allowances for teacher trainees. The reports stemmed from remarks made by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu during a meeting with Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF) executives.

The Ministry clarified the Minister's comments. It stated that the government remains committed to assisting students in Colleges of Education and is willing to explore options to improve financial support. The Ministry noted that an enhanced student loan scheme could be considered an additional measure if needed.

Minister Iddrisu emphasized that the government will maintain the allowances. This will continue until all parties reach a firm agreement after further discussions.

In a statement on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, the Ministry addressed the claims. It referred to a front-page article in The Daily Graphic titled "Teacher Trainee Allowance to go." The Ministry called the headline "sensational" and "misleading."

The Ministry urged media outlets to verify information before publishing. This would prevent unnecessary concerns among stakeholders.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to supporting teacher trainees and education delivery. It called on the public to disregard the misleading report. The Ministry stated, "We urge the public to disregard the misleading publication and rely on official communication from the Ministry for accurate information."
