On Thursday, President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe made some changes to his Cabinet. He gave two ministers new jobs and picked a new head for the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO).
July Moyo used to be the Minister of Public Service, Labour, and Social Welfare. Now, he will be the Minister of Energy and Power Development. Edgar Moyo was the Minister of Energy and Power Development. He will take over July Moyo's old job as Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare.
These changes started right away.
President Mnangagwa also chose Dr. Fulton Mangwanya to lead the CIO. The CIO is part of the President's Department. Dr. Mangwanya is taking over from Ambassador Isaac Moyo. Ambassador Moyo has been in charge since December 2017.
July Moyo is becoming the Energy Minister at a hard time. Zimbabwe doesn't have enough electricity. There wasn't a lot of water in Kariba Dam last year because of El-Niño. But Zimbabwe is working on 18 new power projects. They could make 4,000 megawatts of electricity in the next two years. That would be enough for Zimbabwe and even extra to sell to other countries.
On Thursday, Zimbabwe produced 935 megawatts of electricity, which came from places like Hwange, Kariba, and some independent power companies. However, Zimbabwe needs about 1,800 megawatts to keep everyone's lights on.
Dr. Mangwanya worked for the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority before and has been its director-general since August 2017. People say he works hard and is good at his job. He started out managing farms in the 1980s and joined the President's Department in 1988.
