Mnangagwa's Diplomacy Puts Zimbabwe Back on Map

The head of the Commonwealth, Patricia Scotland, thinks Zimbabwe is making significant steps toward democracy. She believes the country could do well if it joins the Commonwealth group again. Right now, many countries in the Commonwealth want Zimbabwe back in their group of 56 nations.

Zimbabwe's President Mnangagwa is working hard to make friends with other countries and groups worldwide. He's having some success with this plan. The biggest newspaper in Canada says most Commonwealth countries think letting Zimbabwe join would help it become more democratic.

The Commonwealth is moving fast on this. They asked all member countries to share their thoughts about Zimbabwe joining by November 26. If everyone agrees, Zimbabwe can then request to join officially.

The Commonwealth has been watching Zimbabwe closely. They've seen good changes in how the country runs its politics and laws. Between 2018 and 2022, they checked on Zimbabwe several times. They looked at voting laws, freedom for news reporters, and how political parties get along.

Zimbabwe has fixed some big problems. They've made better laws about private groups and the media. They also tried to make things fairer before their 2023 elections. The Commonwealth wants to help Zimbabwe improve by training police and helping with laws.

Zimbabwe left the Commonwealth in 2002 when it started taking farmland from some owners to give to others. Now, Canada is considering letting them back in, and most African countries want Zimbabwe to join again.

The Commonwealth is keeping its full report private for now. It wants member countries to read it carefully before they decide about Zimbabwe. Charmaine Wright, who works for the Commonwealth, says it has a careful way of letting countries join again. They talk to many people and look at lots of information first.
