Mombasa shuts out Nakuru as parks go free for tourism

Kenya marked World Tourism Day on Saturday with celebrations in Mombasa led by Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano. The annual observance featured the theme "Tourism and Sustainable Transformation" and emphasized positive change for communities and conservation. Officials announced free entry to 33 national parks, game reserves and sanctuaries across the nation. Lake Nakuru National Park remained excluded from the offer, requiring visitors to hold prepaid eCitizen tickets.

Miano joined Kenya Wildlife Service Director-General Erustus Kanga for a street procession through the coastal city. Governor Abdullswamad Sherrif Nassir, tourism stakeholders and diplomatic representatives participated in the march. Cultural exhibits and showcases took place at Mama Ngina Waterfront throughout the weekend. The United Nations World Tourism Organization established the annual event in 1980 to promote sector awareness globally.
