South African businessman Patrice Motsepe grabbed another term as head of African football yesterday. Nobody challenged him at the big meeting in Cairo, Egypt. Motsepe runs the Confederation of African Football and will stay boss for four more years. His family controls one of Africa's major soccer clubs named Mamelodi Sundowns.
Former soccer star Samuel Eto'o jumped onto the leadership board without anyone running against him. The Cameroon Football Federation president recently won his right to even compete through an appeal. Eto'o had faced serious troubles last year with two different bans. FIFA blocked him from attending national team matches after he verbally attacked game officials. African football authorities also tried hitting him with a $200,000 fine for working with a betting company.
The election saw five additional people take leadership spots without any opposition. Liberia's Mustapha Ishola Raji kept his position for another four years. Newcomers to the committee include representatives from Congo, Tanzania, Ghana, and Algeria. Elvis Chetty from Seychelles lost his spot when members picked Mozambique's Feizal Sidat and Mauritius' Samir Sobha instead.
Six Africans earned spots on the worldwide FIFA Council during the meeting. Egypt's Hany Abo Rida, a member since 2009, maintained his position alongside Morocco's Fouzi Lekjaa. Four fresh faces joined the global football body for the first time. The new FIFA Council members come from Comoros, Niger, Mauritania, and Djibouti.
