Mottley calls early election as Barbados preps for another red wave

The island's leader is calling an early vote to seek another term. Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley announced a general election, moving the contest forward ahead of the constitutional deadline. The Barbados Labour Party has finalized its full slate of thirty candidates for the House of Assembly.

Mottley made the declaration at a party nomination meeting confirming attorney Michael Lashley for a constituency. Parliament will be dissolved to begin the formal campaign period. The decision follows earlier hints from the Prime Minister about an early political contest.

She pointed to economic progress as a reason for seeking a renewed mandate, citing consistent growth and high foreign reserves. Mottley also acknowledged remaining challenges for the nation. She urged party supporters to prepare for an intense mobilization effort.

This move marks the second time Mottley has dissolved parliament with a year left in her term. Her party achieved a total of thirty seat victories in the two previous general elections. Political activity is expected to ramp up across Barbados as the election approaches.
