MP Stirs Debate Over Party Colors Worn in Parliament

A female lawmaker caused trouble in parliament after wearing bright yellow clothes during Thursday's session. Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba walked into the National Assembly dressed head to toe in yellow with black trim around her neck. She matched her yellow dress with yellow jewelry and yellow shoes that reminded everyone of the ruling UDA party colors. Pro-government members immediately complained about her outfit choice. They said she broke parliament rules about wearing party colors inside the chamber.

Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo stood up and asked the Speaker to decide if Wamuchomba dressed properly for the meeting. She pointed out that everything the woman wore was yellow just like the UDA party brand. Odhiambo claimed this violated House Standing Orders about political symbols. Speaker Moses Wetangula rejected her complaint and said parliament never banned specific colors from being worn. He explained that only party symbols were discouraged inside the meeting room.

Wamuchomba fought back against the criticism and accused Odhiambo of targeting her unfairly. She said the other lawmaker picked on her because she planned to oppose the Finance Bill during debates. Wamuchomba noted that even the parliament seats had yellow emblems on them already. The Speaker ruled that both women were out of order during their argument.
