Mugimba Appeal Slammed Genocide Perp Gets 25 Years

A court in Rwanda said a man named Jean-Baptiste Mugimba must stay in prison for 25 years. He did bad things during a terrible time in Rwanda back in 1994. He helped hurt many people from a group called the Tutsi.

Mugimba worked for a group that hurt lots of Tutsi people. Two years ago, judges said he helped plan these bad things. They found out he made lists of people to hurt and set up places to catch them in parts of Kigali, a big city in Rwanda.

Mugimba told the court they had made a mistake. He said people lied about him because they wanted his things. The court listened but did not believe him. Many people saw him plan meetings at his house where they made plans to hurt others.

The people who wanted Mugimba punished asked the court to keep him in jail forever. They said someone named Jean-Marie Vianney Nyabyenda first told the truth about Mugimba's bad actions but later changed his story. The court thought someone paid Nyabyenda to change what he said.

The court decided 25 years in jail was right for Mugimba. They said he acted nice during his time in court and did not try to make things take longer. Before coming to Rwanda, Mugimba lived in a country called the Netherlands. The police there caught him and sent him back to Rwanda in 2016. Another man named Jean Claude Iyamuremye came with him. Both men must stay in jail for 25 years because of the bad things they did.

This case helps bring peace to many people who lost family members during the terrible time in Rwanda. The court wants to make sure people who did bad things answer for what they did.
