Munich airport shuts down as mystery drones terrorize Germany

Munich Airport resumed operations on Friday morning after drone sightings forced authorities to suspend flights late on Thursday night. German air traffic control restricted operations at 10:18 p.m. local time before halting all flights, and the incident affected 17 flights and nearly 3,000 passengers. Airport officials stated that passenger safety remained the top priority when drones appeared in the airspace.

The Munich closure marks the latest disruption in a series of drone incidents across Europe during the past week. Airports in Poland, Norway, and Denmark temporarily suspended operations because of unauthorized drone activity, while Estonia and Romania reported airspace violations that they attributed to Russia. Moscow has denied involvement in any drone operations near European airports.

Aalborg Airport in Denmark shut down twice within 24 hours on Sept. 26 after suspected drone incursions. Danish Deputy Prime Minister Troels Lund Poulsen described the activity as a systematic operation carried out by a professional actor, and he expressed confidence that authorities would identify those responsible. Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard said the incidents aimed to create fear and division among citizens.

Copenhagen Airport experienced a similar disruption on Sept. 22, and authorities noted that the drones at Aalborg followed patterns identical to those that paused Copenhagen operations. Norwegian officials closed Oslo Airport airspace for three hours on Sept. 22 because of potential threats from unauthorized drone flights.
