Musengezi targets the ballot after failed court drama

A political troublemaker just traded lawsuits for a ballot box. Sybeth Musengezi formally told the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission about his new party, Suthisa ilizwe – Gutsaruzhinji. His letter reached ZEC chairperson Justice Priscilla Chigumba, stating the group was set up under electoral rules. Musengezi acts as the party’s President and Patriot in Command, operating from an address in Mt Hampden, Harare.

The communication requested guidance on official procedures. It also asked for inclusion in the commission’s database to get state messages and election invites. SI-G promised to provide its constitution and leader details. The party insists that only its nationally approved structures can engage in politics.

Musengezi gained attention by taking President Emmerson Mnangagwa and ZANU-PF to court. He argued Mnangagwa’s ascent broke constitutional rules, pointing to alleged internal party problems. Judges threw out the case, but the fight stirred public debate about power and legality.

This formal party launch moves the activist into Zimbabwe’s packed opposition scene. It marks a shift from legal challenges toward direct electoral competition. The effort tests whether his confrontational stance can attract voters.
