Museveni Cheers MPs Letting Army Court Civilians

President Museveni praised lawmakers for approving changes to military court rules on Wednesday. He spoke to leaders from the Luwero district at Timnah Schools. The president thanked his party members for supporting the new law. His ruling party used its majority to pass the bill despite angry opposition members. The new rules let army courts judge regular citizens accused of serious crimes like treason and gun possession.

Museveni said regular courts cannot handle cases about military weapons or soldiers. He thinks civilian judges who struggle with simple theft cases should not deal with army matters. The president wants people who misuse guns or uniforms to face military judges. He believes this new system will create better discipline among soldiers and civilians. His son, General Muhoozi, also supported the bill on social media.

Opposition politicians plan to fight the law in higher courts. They say the bill breaks the Constitution and ignores Supreme Court decisions. Legal experts worry about unfair trials and limited appeal rights. Many groups say parliament did not ask enough people for opinions before voting. The controversy continues as critics prepare court challenges.
