Museveni promises permanent resettlement for landslide victims

President Yoweri Museveni has assured the people of Bulambuli District that the government will provide a permanent and dignified resettlement for victims of the recent landslides. During a campaign event in Bulambuli, Museveni outlined plans to resettle families on 2,000 acres of land, offering two acres per family along with 10 million shillings each. The government is also allocating 50 billion shillings to purchase additional land to aid further resettlement.

This initiative is part of a broader program aimed at relocating people from high-risk areas in the Mt. Elgon region, a strategy that follows the 2010 Nametsi landslide disaster. The government’s approach, backed by scientific research, focuses on moving residents away from unstable, deforested slopes. Additionally, Museveni highlighted the importance of preserving the environment and stated that the relocation is part of the country's effort to prevent future tragedies.

Further plans were shared to improve infrastructure in Bulambuli, including road construction and the upgrading of health and educational facilities. Museveni also emphasized economic initiatives aimed at empowering local communities, such as the national cattle restocking program, and pledged continued government support to promote household prosperity.
