Museveni Sends 500 Tons Of Milk To Algeria

President Museveni sent the first batch of powdered milk to Algeria Thursday from State House Entebbe. Officials from Agriculture Ministry and Brookside Limited attended the ceremony for four containers of dairy products. The shipment contains 500 metric tons of milk powder bound for African markets. Uganda plans to export 2,100 total metric tons worth over 8 million dollars to Algeria. This trade agreement started during presidential negotiations and a signed agreement from March 2023.

Agriculture Minister Frank Tumwebaze praised Brookside company and dairy farmers for reaching this export milestone. Kennedy Gatheru from Brookside Africa thanked the president for helping secure Algerian customers. Algeria wants to spend 700 million dollars annually on Ugandan milk imports instead of other suppliers. The North African nation appreciates Uganda's high quality fresh dairy products. Government leaders believe this partnership will create more opportunities for local farmers.

Uganda produces about 3.85 billion liters of milk each year as of September 2023. Dairy production grows at 11 percent annually over the past five years. The milk industry contributes 6.5 percent of the country's agricultural economy. Better farming methods and processing facilities help increase production levels. Export challenges remain with shipping and regulations that limit international sales opportunities.
