Myanmar arrests 1,600 in crackdown on border scam hubs

Myanmar authorities detained nearly 1,600 foreigners during recent operations targeting an infamous border scam complex, according to military officials. The five-day sweep at Shwe Kokko also yielded thousands of computers, mobile devices, and satellite internet equipment used in fraudulent operations that extract billions annually from victims worldwide.

Security forces destroyed hundreds of seized electronics with heavy machinery while prosecuting alleged perpetrators. Observers suggest the junta orchestrated these raids under pressure from Beijing, whose citizens face exploitation both as fraud targets and trafficked workers, though critics argue enforcement remains selective to protect lucrative militia partnerships.

United Nations researchers estimate that scam operations across Southeast and East Asia alone defrauded victims of up to 37 billion dollars last year, with actual global losses likely exceeding reported figures substantially.
