Mzembi's health fails in Harare prison ahead of his trial

Walter Mzembi faces serious health complications while detained at Harare Remand Prison on charges of misappropriating trust property valued at two million US dollars. The 61-year-old former foreign affairs minister returned to Zimbabwe in June after spending seven years in South African exile. Authorities arrested him following his failure to appear in court after receiving bail for cancer treatment in 2018. The state alleges Mzembi improperly transferred television equipment purchased for the 2010 FIFA World Cup public viewing to Emmanuel Makandiwa's United Family International Church during his tenure as Tourism Minister. Court officials revoked his previous bail and issued multiple arrest warrants for his absence.

Legal representative Jacqueline Sande-Kamangu confirmed that prison medical staff admitted Mzembi to the facility hospital due to deteriorating health conditions. His trial at the High Court remains scheduled for August 6 pending completion of investigative procedures and formal charges. Public response to news of his illness varies between expressions of sympathy and criticism regarding neglected institutional conditions. Citizens have pointed to the irony of former officials experiencing the consequences of underfunded prison and healthcare systems. Mzembi's case highlights ongoing accountability efforts targeting former government ministers.
