Nairobi Mask Vendor Shot by Police Clings to Life

Boniface Kariuki fights for his life at Kenyatta National Hospital after police shot him during Tuesday protests. The mask seller took a bullet to his head during anti-police demonstrations at Nairobi's Central Business District. Hospital staff rushed Kariuki into emergency surgery around 8:50 PM to remove the bullet from his skull. Doctors found severe bleeding and brain damage when he arrived from a downtown clinic. The medical team placed him on life support after the two-hour operation.

Hospital Chief Executive William Sigilai told reporters that Kariuki remains under constant medical watch. Neurosurgeon Dr. Sam Njiru led the complex brain surgery to save the patient's life. A CT scan showed the bullet hit the left side of Kariuki's head causing critical injuries. Emergency doctor Dr. Janet Sugut helped stabilize the wounded man before surgery began. Medical staff continue monitoring his condition around the clock.

Protesters demanded justice for teacher Albert Ojwang who died inside Central Police Station cells. Police killed Ojwang during his detention sparking angry demonstrations across the city center. Kariuki sold face masks during the protest when officers opened fire on crowds. Sixteen people reached Kenyatta National Hospital with various injuries from the violent clashes. Seven patients needed hospital admission and two underwent emergency surgical procedures.
