Hawker Shot During Nairobi Protest Dies, Police Officers in Custody for Investigation

Bonface Mwangi Kariuki passed away Monday afternoon at Kenyatta National Hospital. Family spokesperson Emily Wanjira announced his death occurred at 3:15 pm. Hospital staff confirmed the hawker had died after weeks of treatment. Medical teams had kept him alive on life support machines since his arrival. Doctors informed relatives Saturday night that brain death had occurred.

Police officers shot Kariuki during protests on June 17 near Nairobi city center. The shooting happened on Mondlane Street as authorities scattered demonstrators. Bystanders carried the wounded man to the hospital for emergency care. Surgeons operated on him before placing him in intensive care. His condition remained critical from the day of admission until his death.

Authorities arrested two officers connected to the shooting incident. Klinzy Barasa Masinde and Duncan Kiprono face detention at Capitol Hill police station. Officials detained both men on June 19 for fifteen days pending investigation. The Independent Policing Oversight Authority leads the inquiry into their actions. Murder charges may be filed against the officers.

Criminal investigators requested additional time to complete their examination of evidence. The Director of Criminal Investigations wanted twenty-one extra days for the probe. Officials plan to conduct ballistic testing on the officers' weapons. Security camera footage requires forensic analysis for the case. Witness statements need collection to build the prosecution file.
