Namibia safaris and conservancies get 90 day breather

The Namibia Competition Commission gave Ultimate Safaris and three communal conservancies extra time to respond to anti-competition claims. NaCC spokesperson Dina //Gowases announced a 90-day extension after meeting with environmental officials on March 14.

Doro! Nawas, Uibasen Twyfelfontein, and Sorris Sorris conservancies from the Kunene region face scrutiny alongside the tourism company. The investigation began last September when someone complained about exclusive agreements between these parties that might break competition laws.

Earlier this year, authorities asked the conservancies to end these exclusive deals within 30 days or face legal consequences. The Environment Ministry must prepare a detailed report explaining the legal background of communal conservancies. Officials will use this information to further discuss how to proceed.

The commission remains open to enforcement actions depending on what happens during consultations. Both government bodies want to find a solution that works for everyone involved. The ministry agreed to tell all affected parties about the extended deadline.
