NAWEC finds widespread power theft, suspects inside job in Gambia

NAWEC Managing Director Gallo Saidy conducted a media briefing in Batokunku yesterday regarding widespread electricity theft. The utility company identified more than 25 unauthorized power connections within the Batokunku area alone. Saidy emphasized that such practices threaten public safety and constitute illegal activities. He warned that disciplinary measures would target both staff members and civilians engaging in these violations. The director urged community members to report suspicious electrical installations to the appropriate authorities.

Senior Manager Baboucarr Awe explained how unauthorized connections destabilize the electrical network. These improper installations generate technical losses that create financial burdens for the institution and the nation. Awe noted that illegal connections frequently cause voltage drops and power outages across affected regions. The installations pose serious electrocution risks due to substandard wiring methods. He stressed that one megawatt of lost power represents substantial economic damage to the country's electrical infrastructure.
