Netanyahu coalition fractures as Trump Gaza plan sparks revolt

A split has surfaced within Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s far-right coalition as the government debates the U.S. proposal to end the war in Gaza. Netanyahu, under pressure from former U.S. President Donald Trump to adopt a 20-point plan, faces strong resistance from ultra-nationalist allies who reject any scenario allowing Hamas to remain involved in Gaza, even if its members disarm and renounce violence.

Trump’s plan, which Netanyahu supports, seeks Gaza’s demilitarization and the exclusion of Hamas from governance, while offering a pathway for hostages to be released in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. Hamas has responded by partially accepting the plan, expressing willingness to negotiate and be part of a future Palestinian framework.

Right-wing ministers, however, have threatened to quit the government if Netanyahu concedes to U.S. terms, raising the risk of early elections. Calls for an extended conflict risk strain public patience in Israel and undermine efforts to expand the Abraham Accords with other Arab states, as countries like Saudi Arabia insist on an end to the war and progress toward Palestinian statehood.

Despite U.S. calls to halt airstrikes, Israeli attacks on Gaza have continued, and the Trump plan’s lack of specifics on timelines and Palestinian statehood has further inflamed tensions within the coalition. Opposition leader Yair Lapid has offered to support the government in order the maintain its stability during the negotiations.
