New KCSE Grading Lets Students Focus on Strengths

Kenya Makes School Tests Fair.

Kenya changed its rules for high school tests. The new system helps more young people enter college and job training schools.

The Kenya National Tests Council made these changes. They want to judge students by what they do best, not by hard rules about which classes they must take.

Under the new rules, students must still take math tests. But they only need to show they are good at one of these: English, Kiswahili, or Kenya Sign Language. In the past, they had to prove they knew both English and Kiswahili.

The biggest change lets students pick their best five classes for their final mark. Math and one language come first, and then they can add any five classes where they did well.

Before this, students had to take certain science classes and other fixed subjects. This hurt many young people who were good at art or business but not at science.

The new plan gives students more freedom. Someone good at farming, business, or computers can use these marks with their main classes, which better shows what students can really do.

These changes make it easier to enter college. In past years, many bright students missed their chance because they did poorly in one required class. The new rules mean more students can join universities and job training schools.

The shift fits what employers want. Many jobs need people who know business and how to fix problems, not just what they can learn from books. Students can focus on what they need for their future work.

The new rules make school better for everyone. Many students felt bad when they could not pass certain required classes, and some even left school. These changes let them work hard at what they like and do well.

Teachers can help students pick the right classes for their skills. Schools might also add more hands-on classes to teach useful job skills, which could help more young people find good work.

The plan needs good teaching to work well. Teachers must learn how to guide students in picking classes that match their skills and job hopes. Schools need more tools and space to teach new subjects.

Schools must also help students with special needs. Using sign language as a marked choice helps deaf students, but schools need more ways to help all students with different needs learn well.

This new way of marking shows that Kenya wants to improve schoolwork for all students. It lets young people shine in what they do best instead of forcing them to be good at everything.

The plan will work if teachers, parents, and students understand these changes. Kenya must monitor progress and fix any problems that arise. If all goes well, more young people will learn useful skills and find good jobs.
