New Piccadilly line trains delayed until late 2026

London Underground passengers must wait longer for shiny new Piccadilly line trains. The fancy carriages were supposed to arrive late next year but officials pushed back the launch until mid-2026. Transport bosses blame tricky engineering problems for the one-year delay.

The 94 modern trains will replace aging 1970s carriages that have served passengers for decades. Each new train features air conditioning and walk-through design with security cameras throughout. Engineers call them the most complicated trains ever built for London's underground network.

Testing starts this summer and could take a full year to complete. The Piccadilly line presents unique challenges because it runs deeper underground than other routes. Workers must figure out how new technology works with tunnel systems built nearly 120 years ago.

Siemens Mobility designed the eco-friendly trains with bigger doors and real-time passenger information screens. The carriages hold 10 percent more people than current models. Company leaders apologized for the extra wait but promised smoother rides for the next three decades.

Transport for London confirmed the delay affects all 94 trains in the order. The new fleet will be the first deep-level tube trains with proper air conditioning systems. Officials say the complexity comes from working with one of London's longest underground railway lines.
