The company making Uganda's new license plates plans to crank out up to a million of them next year. Officials from the Intelligent Transport Monitoring System, or ITMS, announced this target at an event in Kampala. They handed out a commemorative plate to a motorcycle taxi rider, marking the two hundred thousand and twenty-sixth plate issued. The firm stated it will end the current year with three hundred thousand first-time registrations completed nationwide.
A boda boda driver who got the milestone plate said he appreciates the faster service and feels more secure now. The head of Spiro Uganda, Bruce Mucunguzi, noted that teamwork between different groups has made the process better for vehicle owners. He mentioned working with the transport ministry and registration office to speed up installations and solve problems within a day. Joseph Tumwine, who leads installations for ITMS, said they currently finish eighty-three percent of jobs on the scheduled day and aim to improve.
The big production goal for 2026 will be supported by their factory in Kyambogo. That facility already employs three hundred Ugandans and can make twenty five hundred plates per work shift. ITMS emphasized that local manufacturing builds domestic capacity and ensures a transparent process for drivers. Partner company Spiro Uganda, which started operations recently, offers electric motorcycles and a network of battery swap stations for riders.
The broader monitoring system incorporates data analytics and electronic penalty tools. It also aids police in finding stolen vehicles and motorcycles, aiming to improve overall road safety and transport management across the country.
