Nkrumah dunks on Mahama's New York COVID take

Kojo Oppong Nkrumah questioned President John Mahama's recent statements about global poverty during the COVID-19 pandemic. The former Information Minister and current Ofoase Ayirebi MP reacted on social media after Mahama addressed the Accra Reset event at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 23. Mahama acknowledged that worldwide extreme poverty dropped from 36 percent in 1990 to eight percent by 2019. He credited advances in healthcare with saving over 50 million lives through improved vaccine access and disease prevention programs.

The president described how the pandemic reversed two decades of poverty reduction within less than two years. Climate change has pushed 735 million people back into chronic hunger according to his remarks. African nations face external debt exceeding one trillion dollars as of 2023. Oppong Nkrumah expressed disbelief at these admissions, questioning whether Mahama previously dismissed COVID-19 economic impacts while serving in opposition roles.
