Nkulumane bears the brunt as the Bulawayo sewer crisis deepens

Bulawayo faces severe sewage infrastructure challenges as the Nkulumane suburb generates approximately half of the city's blockage incidents. Municipal authorities process between 90 and 120 obstruction reports each day from various neighborhoods. Water access remains limited to twice weekly for most residents, causing solid materials to accumulate within drainage systems rather than flowing freely.

August statistics show workers resolved 1,940 pipe obstructions while reducing pending cases from 823 to 338. The municipality attributes problems to aging equipment and residents disposing of inappropriate items through drains. Private companies assist with specialized cleaning equipment and removal services.

Mayor David Coltart announced plans for vehicle fleet modernization and workforce reorganization. Urban development specialists warn that original pipe networks cannot handle current population densities in older residential areas. City leadership encourages citizens to protect municipal systems by preventing solid waste disposal through sewage outlets.
