North Korea's Bizarre Laws - What You Can't Do There

North Korea has very strict laws that are quite different from those of most countries. The country's leader, Kim Jong-Un, governs in a way that many people criticize. He has even faced trade sanctions because of this.

In North Korea, people cannot do many common things. They are not allowed to travel to other countries for vacation. Western fashion, hairstyles, and food are banned. This includes items like Coca-Cola, Apple products, and fast food. Even reading the Bible is against the law.

Birth control is also illegal in North Korea. People cannot buy condoms, sanitary pads, or tampons. Women have to use reusable cloth pads instead.

The government controls what people wear. Men must wear long pants, not shorts. Women's skirts and pants have to be a certain length. Blue jeans and unique hairstyles are not allowed. The government says they represent America too much.

Visitors to North Korea have their belongings checked thoroughly. The government looks at any music, TV shows, movies, or reading material they bring. People in the country can only watch three TV channels, all run by the government.

Practicing religion in public is punishable by death. The government claims there is religious freedom, but that is not true. Making phone calls to other countries is also a crime. In 2007, a man was killed for making international calls.

Strangely, marijuana is legal in North Korea. People can buy and use it without any penalty. However, most people prefer traditional Korean street food. A spicy cabbage dish called kimchi is very popular.

North Koreans cannot choose their jobs. The government assigns work based on what the country needs. People who refuse are sent to labor camps. Citizens are also not allowed to have the same name as the country's leader. Everyone named Kim had to change their name by law.

If someone in North Korea takes their own life, their whole family is punished. This punishment even extends to three generations of relatives. These are just some of the many harsh rules that people in North Korea have to follow.
