Not Enough Space for Future Doctors

Medical students face big problems at KNUST in Kumasi. Not enough classrooms, labs, and meeting spaces at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital stop more students from going to medical school. The School of Medical Sciences could produce many more future doctors if they had better places to learn and study.

Professor Akwasi Antwi-Kusi runs the school. He said they turned away almost 800 smart students this year. The school picked 1,040 top students in grades six to eight for interviews. However, they could only let in 240 because they lack space for everyone else.

The professor spoke at the medical school's 50th birthday party. He said that after fifty years, teachers still have no offices at the hospital. Their classrooms fit just 120 people, even though they have 320 medical and dental students.

Students must travel back and forth between the university and the hospital for classes and tests. The 15-kilometer trip wastes time and money, hurts their learning, and makes clinical work harder.

Former students want to help fix this mess. They plan to build a big 400-seat classroom building at the hospital. This project needs GH₵50 million and will include offices, meeting rooms, a student clinic, and food service.

Professor Antwi-Danso asked everyone to donate money toward the new building. He wants businesses to support medical education as part of their community help programs. He also thinks the government should raise medical school fees and create special loans for medical students.

He explained that medical schools in Ghana struggle because they cost a lot but charge very little. American medical schools charge about $60,000 each year, while Ghana charges just GH₵10,000. This leaves schools without enough cash for buildings, tools, teacher pay, and other needs.

The school celebrates its fiftieth anniversary looking backward at past successes and forward to future challenges. Medical education plays a vital role in creating doctors who serve throughout Ghana. Better buildings would help train more doctors for areas that need them most.
