Nurses accused of cashing in on a patient’s death

Three former nurses at Appelsbosch Hospital in KwaZulu-Natal are under investigation for allegedly taking out fraudulent funeral policies on a patient without his knowledge and collecting nearly R200,000 following his death. The family of Nduduzo Mbatha discovered the scheme after their own insurer noted multiple active policies under his name. The nurses, identified as Andiswa Mkhasibe, Dladlathe, and Phakathi, resigned abruptly when confronted by hospital management.

Mbatha, a 24-year-old who was wheelchair-bound, died at the facility in November 2024 after his health deteriorated rapidly over two days. His family has raised questions about the circumstances of his decline and the subsequent disappearance of his medical file. The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health has referred the case to the Special Investigating Unit, while police continue a separate criminal probe into the fraud allegations.
